{"id":1144,"date":"2015-08-27T19:19:09","date_gmt":"2015-08-27T19:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.kurzweilai.net\/?p=260457"},"modified":"2015-09-01T04:25:23","modified_gmt":"2015-09-01T04:25:23","slug":"hawking-offers-new-solution-to-black-hole-information-paradox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hoo.central12.com\/fugic\/2015\/08\/27\/hawking-offers-new-solution-to-black-hole-information-paradox\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawking offers new solution to &lsquo;black hole information paradox&rsquo;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_260471\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 336px;  border: 1px solid #dddddd; background-color: #f3f3f3; padding-top: 4px; margin: 10px; text-align:center; display: block; margin-right: auto; margin-left: auto;\"><img class=\" wp-image-260471\" title=\"Hawking-'t Hooft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.kurzweilai.net\/images\/Hawking-t-Hooft.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"326\" height=\"274\" \/><p style=' padding: 0 4px 5px; margin: 0;'  class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nobel physics laureate Gerard &#8216;t Hooft of Utrecht University, the Netherlands, confers with Stephen Hawking at a week-long conference at KTH Royal Institute of Technology on the information loss paradox (photo credit: H\u00e5kan Lindgren)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Addressing a current controversy in physics about information in black holes, \u201cI propose that the information is stored not in the interior of the black hole as one might expect, but on its boundary, the event horizon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Event_horizon\" >event horizon<\/a> is a boundary around a black hole beyond which events cannot affect an outside observer, also known as &#8220;the point of no return&#8221; &#8212; where gravitational pull becomes so great as to make escape impossible.<\/p>\n<p>Hawking is now suggesting that the information about any incoming particles passing through this event horizon is translated into a 2D hologram. \u201cThe idea is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mass_in_general_relativity\" >super-translations<\/a> are a hologram of the ingoing particles,\u201d he said. \u201cThus they contain all the information that would otherwise be lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That provides a new solution for the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_hole_information_paradox\" >black hole information paradox<\/a>&#8220;: what happens to the information about the physical state of things that are swallowed up by black holes? Is it destroyed, as our understanding of general relativity would predict? If so, that would violate the laws of quantum mechanics.<\/p>\n<p><iframe frameborder=\"0\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DkRDmJpthXg\" width=\"640\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<em>KTH Royal Institute of Technology | Hawking presents new idea on how information could escape black holes<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Hawking said that also offers hope (at least for the information that represents you) if you happen to have fallen into a black hole &#8212; supporting the premise of the movie <em>Interstellar<\/em>. If the hole was large and rotating, &#8220;it might have a passage to another universe&#8221; via <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawking_radiation\" >Hawking radiation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But you couldn&#8217;t come back to our universe.
