In theory, any planet with at least one orbiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/55-earths-moon-formation-composition-and-orbit.html\"><u>moon<\/u><\/a> would have times where that moon might eclipse some part of its sun to anyone looking up from the planet's surface.  <\/p><p>On Aug. 13, 2026, one day after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/stargazing\/solar-eclipses\/see-gorgeous-views-of-the-aug-12-total-solar-eclipse-captured-from-space\"><u>Earth's total solar eclipse<\/u><\/a> in which our moon temporarily blocked out our sun for skywatchers in some locations, <a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/mars2020\/multimedia\/raw-images\/ZL7_1948_0839864813_757EBY_N0910000ZCAM01576_1100LMJ\" ><u>Mars saw its own solar eclipse<\/u><\/a><u>.<\/u><\/p><p>Looking up with its left Mastcam-Z camera, Perseverance snapped this image of one of Mars' two moons, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20346-phobos-moon.html\"><u>Phobos<\/u><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/20345-deimos-moon.html\"><u>Deimos<\/u><\/a>, partially eclipsing the sun. This appears to be Phobos \u2014 the larger of the pair \u2014 eclipsing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\"><u>the sun<\/u><\/a>. <\/p><h2 id=\"why-is-it-incredible\">Why is it incredible? <\/h2><p>So far, we humans have only directly had vantage points on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/54-earth-history-composition-and-atmosphere.html\"><u>Earth<\/u><\/a>, in Earth orbit and on the moon. We have not yet landed humans on Mars, and it remains unclear how long it might be before that happens. <\/p><p>But robotic explorers like Perseverance allow us to travel where we can't go ourselves. Such travelers have taken us into interstellar space and all throughout our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/16080-solar-system-planets.html\"><u>solar system<\/u><\/a>. From <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/48-saturn-the-solar-systems-major-ring-bearer.html\"><u>Saturn<\/u><\/a>'s rings to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/41-neptune-the-other-blue-planet-in-our-solar-system.html\"><u>Neptune<\/u><\/a>'s distant, icy neighborhood, robotic probes have allowed humanity's reach to stretch far through the cosmos. <\/p><p>And thanks to Perseverance and its two \"eyes,\" the two Mastcam-Z cameras located high on its mast, we can travel right to the surface of Mars, look up and see an alien solar eclipse.
